Executive Summary
Udyam Registration (formerly MSME registration) is the official process for registering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in India under the Ministry of MSME. Introduced on July 1, 2020, it replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar system with a more streamlined, single-window, online process. Registration provides businesses with a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) and access to numerous government schemes, subsidies, credit facilities, and preferential treatment in government tenders. The classification is based on investment in plant & machinery/equipment and annual turnover, with different thresholds for manufacturing and service enterprises.
What is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is the official registration process for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. Launched by the Ministry of MSME on July 1, 2020, it replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system to provide a more streamlined and paperless registration experience.
Key Features of Udyam Registration:
- Online & Paperless: Completely online process through the Udyam Registration Portal
- No Registration Fee: Completely free of cost - no government fees
- Lifetime Validity: Registration is valid for the lifetime of the enterprise (unless upgraded to higher category)
- No Renewal Required: Unlike previous systems, no annual renewal needed
- Integration: PAN and GST-linked verification for transparency
- Single Window: One-stop access to various government schemes
MSME Classification Criteria:
The MSME classification is based on two parameters: Investment in Plant & Machinery/Equipment and Annual Turnover. A business must satisfy both criteria:
- Micro: Investment up to ₹2.5 crore, Turnover up to ₹10 crore
- Small: Investment up to ₹25 crore, Turnover up to ₹100 crore
- Medium: Investment up to ₹125 crore, Turnover up to ₹500 crore
- (Revised limits effective 1 April 2025 per MSME notification S.O. 1364(E))
Note: Export turnover is not counted for determining MSME status. Once upgraded to a higher category, re-classification to lower category is not permitted.
Who Can Register:
Any business entity engaged in manufacturing, production, processing, preservation of goods, or providing services can register as an MSME. This includes proprietorships, partnerships, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs), Private Limited Companies, Cooperative Societies, and other associations.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Incorrect NIC Code Selection
Solution: Research and select the appropriate NIC Code that accurately describes your primary business activity. Wrong codes may lead to denial of scheme benefits.
Providing Incorrect Investment/Turnover Figures
Solution: Always base your investment and turnover figures on latest ITR and audited financial statements. Underestimating may lead to penalties; overestimating may deny benefits.
Using Unlinked Mobile Number
Solution: Ensure the mobile number linked with Aadhaar is active and accessible. Update Aadhaar records if you have changed your mobile number.
Not Updating Information After Upgrade
Solution: When your business crosses the investment/turnover thresholds, you must upgrade your Udyam registration. Login and update your classification to avoid misrepresentation.
Falling for Paid Registration Scams
Solution: Udyam registration is completely free on the official government portal. Never pay any website claiming to be an official agent or charging for registration.
Not Linking PAN and GST
Solution: PAN is mandatory and GSTIN should be linked if applicable. This ensures seamless verification and access to integrated benefits.
