NIC Code - National Industrial Classification Code

NIC Code is used to classify businesses by their economic activity for Udyam registration and other government purposes.

Key Points

5-digit classification code
Used in Udyam registration
Based on economic activity
Multiple NIC codes allowed
Must match primary business activity

The National Industrial Classification (NIC) code is a standardised numeric system, maintained by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), that classifies every economic activity carried out in India. Whenever you register a business or file with a government authority, the NIC code is how the system records what your enterprise actually does. Picking the right one matters because it feeds into MSME classification, scheme eligibility, statistical surveys and credit assessments.

How the NIC code is structured

The code is hierarchical: each additional digit narrows the activity from a broad sector down to a precise sub-class. Reading left to right, the first two digits tell you the industry, and the full five digits pinpoint the exact line of work. Here is how it breaks down for custom software development.

LevelDigitsExample (software development)
SectionLetterJ – Information and communication
Division2-digit62 – Computer programming, consultancy
Group3-digit620 – Computer programming and related
Class4-digit6201 – Computer programming activities
Sub-class5-digit62011 – Writing, modifying, testing of software

A two-digit division sits inside an alphabetical section, and the five-digit sub-class is the most granular level used in Udyam registration.

Common NIC code examples

These NIC 2008 sub-classes are among the most frequently selected by Indian founders and small businesses.

  • 62011: Writing, modifying, testing of computer software
  • 46900: Non-specialized wholesale trade
  • 47910: Retail sale via mail-order houses or over the internet
  • 68100: Real estate activities with own or leased property
  • 41001: Construction of buildings on own-account or contract basis

Always confirm the exact wording against the code list shown on the portal you are filing on.

Where you need a NIC code

  • Udyam (MSME) registration, where you declare a primary activity and may add secondary ones
  • Company and LLP incorporation through the MCA SPICe+ and FiLLiP forms, which ask for the main division code
  • Import Export Code (IEC) applications and various sector-specific licences
  • Economic census, statistical surveys and policy or industry analysis
  • Bank loan files, government tenders and scheme eligibility checks

Choosing the right code

The Udyam portal lets you register multiple NIC codes when you genuinely operate across activities, but one must be marked as your primary activity — the activity that drives most of your turnover. A manufacturer who also sells directly might list a manufacturing code as primary and a retail code as secondary. Resist the temptation to add codes for work you do not actually perform, since over-classification creates inconsistencies in your profile and can complicate credit or scheme assessments later.

Note on NIC 2025

For years Udyam and MCA filings have run on the five-digit NIC 2008 framework. In November 2025 MoSPI released NIC 2025, which moves to a six-digit structure and adds newer activities such as renewable energy, fintech, e-commerce and AYUSH healthcare. The transition is being rolled out across portals, so at registration you should select from whichever code list the portal presents rather than relying on a memorised number.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a broad code when a specific sub-class exists for your activity
  • Copying a competitor's code without checking it fits your actual operations
  • Forgetting to update your NIC codes on Udyam when your business adds a new line
  • Confusing the NIC code with the HSN or SAC code used for GST, since they serve different purposes
